November 6th-9th

Lab members attended the annual meeting for the Agronomy, Crop Science and Soil Science Societies of America (Tri Societies), in Baltimore, MD. The conference theme was “Communication & Public Engagement for Healthy People & a Healthy Planet”; a theme that aligns nicely with the Lewis Lab’s outreach based research program. Dr. Lewis and students attended talks and posters sessions, along with giving talks and displaying posters of their own. Next year, the meeting will take place the week of Halloween in St. Louis, MO.

Our first stop of the trip was to the nation’s capital, only a short trip southwest from Baltimore and in the heart of “The DMV” (DC, Maryland & Virginia), as the locals call it. Here we see Dr. Burke, Tessa, and Riley posing in front of the Capital Building, one of many landmarks we made stops at. Other stops included the Library of Congress, Washington Monument and Museum of Natural History

Later that night we checked into our hotel in downtown Baltimore, just steps from the Inner Harbor. Part of the Patapsco River, the Inner Harbor not only serves as Baltimore’s waterway to the Atlantic Ocean but is also the center piece of the city’s downtown area.

Several students participated in the graduate poster competition. Hector (left) presented data from his research on enzyme activities in double cropping systems in south Texas. Lauren (second from left) and Nick (second from right) presented their findings from a study in Lamesa, TX, which looked at greenhouse gas emissions from an organic cropping system. Riley (right) presented data from the same organic study but focused on carbon storage in various crop rotations.

Nick (left), Dr. McDonald (second from left), Chris (middle), Dr. Burke (second from right), Tessa (right) present their research during brief but impactful 15 minutes sessions during the meeting. Our group shared import research on carbon cycling, nutrient management, water conservation and cover crop use across the Texas Plains.

The conference was capped off in little Italy, where Dr. DeLaune of the Vernon research center and former student, Dr. Mark McDonald, were able to join us and others from the Lubbock research center for dinner
